Chapter Nineteen

“It’s not like Dalton to miss breakfast,” Kavi mused as we walked toward the practice grounds. “I hope he’s feeling better.”

“Feeling better?” I turned my attention away from the knot in my stomach. “What do you mean?”

“I saw him last night, out by the pavilion. He looked ill. Pale, drawn, queasy. I asked him about it. He brushed me off and headed back to his dorm.” Kavi shook his head. “You know how he is about asking for help. I just hope it’s nothing serious.”

The knot in my stomach tightened. “Yeah. I should go check on him.”

Beau gave me a nudge. “No way. You’re not getting out of flight class. Not since we know how to get you in the air.” His arm hooked around my waist. “I’m lookin’ forward to giving you a boost.”

I felt my cheeks pink up at that. “Easy, cowboy. Not in front of the kids.”

“I’m older than you,” Alazne said with a laugh.

“By a month.” I gave her a gentle shove.

Beau’s arm tightened around me. There was something about the tension in his body that made me snap to attention.

Dax Henessey stood in front of the path to the practice grounds, and he had a posse. A dozen dragons, all varying shades of burly and irate-looking, stood between us and our class.

“Kavi, get to class. We’ve got this,” I said in a casual tone.

“Nope,” he replied. I saw his thin frame tensed for action.

I felt a protective swell in my chest. “Seriously…”

“Seriously, no.” Kavi wasn’t budging.

I forced a relaxed air and stepped forward, slipping from Beau’s grasp. “Can I help you?”

“You can get your corrupted ass out of our academy,” Dax snarled.

I rolled my eyes. “What the hell are you babbling about, Henessey?”

“It’s all adding up, Hearne. Even I can see it now.” He stepped forward from his pack of cronies and jabbed an accusing finger at me. “You’re in bed with Meriwether. Literally, from what I’ve heard.”

My breath caught in my throat. I couldn’t chance a look at Beau, but this was not how I’d wanted him to hear about me and Dalton.

Dax continued. “You’re tainted, and not just by him. You’ve got something wrong with you. Something dark and twisted, something that’s keeping you from being a real dragon. I may not know what it is yet, but I’ve heard stories. Stories from reliable sources.” He gave my shoulder a shove. “I’m gonna find out what your deal is, and I’m gonna blow it wide open. You’re going down, Hearne.”

“Get the fuck out of my way, Henessey.” My heart was pounding. How could he know? How much does he know? Who else knows? “We’re late for class.”

“You’re going to be late for a lot more than class,” he sneered. “We’re going to beat the taint off you right here, right now.”

I ducked the first swing and slammed my shoulder into his stomach before he could pull back for a second. I heard the air rush out of his lungs and felt his body starting to shift to his half-dragon.
